Media Research
Media Research
For my media
coursework I have chosen to do brief 1, and I will be doing the broadcast which
is to create a short film based on a specific topic and print which is how I
will advertise my short film.
The
Universal studios logo is a very simplistic studio logo design. The word
‘universal’ is displayed across in bold print writing, which is In front of the
image of the earth. The image of the earth signifies how grand this movie
studio is and how big they are compared to any other movie studio company. The
picture of the world also shows how world widely known they are. There is a
great contrast of the colour blue with many different shades of it used all
around. The background is simplistic as it is an image of the universe. The universal
studios logo is so widely known as it is not too detailed but memorable.
The Metro
Goldwyn Mayer media company logo is a very iconic image in the film industry as
it has been shown in many big budget movies. The logo carries a golden theme
throughout showing just the prestige of the studio and how premium it is. The
mascot of the studio is called ‘Leo the Lion’ and the image of the lion shows
just the physical strength of the company and just how brave and bold the
company is when making good ideas. The use of the back background makes the
logo itself stand out more and emphasises that the company doesn’t need to add
a fancy/colourful background to make their logo look more appealing.
The iconic 20th century fox studio logo is a very popular
symbol in pop culture as many movies have been produced by this massive
corporation. This Logo is widely recognised by its golden ‘20th century fox’
name and a vibrant background. It has a crisp and clean look, it isn’t too
detailed to the point where it is harder to distinguish but it is not too
simple. The studio logo will have slightly different versions of this logo for
the different genres of movies which is the same for other studios.
Founded: 31 May 1935
20th Century Fox has
distributed famous film series, including the first two Star Wars trilogies,
Ice Age, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Maze Runner, X-Men, Die Hard, Home Alone, Planet
of the Apes, Independence Day, Night at the Museum, Power Rangers, Percy
Jackson, Taken, Fantastic Four, Joy Ride, The Omen, Alien, Predator, Rio, and
Alvin and the Chipmunks. The studio is also credited for distributing Avatar
and Titanic, the highest and second highest grossing films respectively at the
box-office not adjusted for inflation. Television series produced by Fox
includes The Simpsons, Family Guy, M*A*S*H, The X-Files, Bob's Burgers, Bones,
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Futurama, American Dad!, How I Met Your Mother,
Archer, Glee, Modern Family, Empire, Malcolm in the Middle, New Girl, King of the Hill, and 24. Among
the most famous actresses to come out of this studio were Shirley Temple, who
was 20th Century Fox's first film star, Alice Faye, Betty Grable, Gene Tierney,
Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield. The studio also contracted the first
African-American cinema star, Dorothy Dandridge.
Bad Robot Productions (formerly known as only Bad Robot) is an American film and
television production company owned by J.J. Abrams. Bad Robot is not as big as other
production companies such as 20th Century Fox, Paramount etc. The
design to the logo of Bad Robot productions is simple yet very detailed as it
shows a small red robot in the middle of a tall grass field. The logo has a
very optimistic feel to it as it might indicate the company isn’t afraid to go
new heights.

The Marvel
logo is a very simplistic one. It has a red background within a red box with
Marvel in white bold and white outlining. They used the colour red to signify
the main emotions of the books which are love, anger, passion and the fact that
blood is red and in the comics there is a lot of bloodshed.
The Logo is
big and bold and that is the main focus which draws the attention of the viewer
watching it. The font is big and stands straight with no curls or kinks to show
that the company stands tall and strong just like a super-hero. The Logo also
does not over complicate itself because it only uses solid colours which makes
the logo straight forward and not hard to look at however it also makes it very
basic yet the audience still know that they are watching an action bloody movie
This logo is
easily recognisable to viewers who are comic fans and if they were to only show
a small snippet of logo, many people would be able to identify that it is the
marvel studios logo.

The
Paramount logo has stars to symbolise their content as out of this world, this
tells the viewer that they are about to watch a well-established film because
of the sheer popularity when it comes to this film company. The Stars and the
writing being placed on top of the mountain with clouds shown is to show that
the company is at the top and that they never settle to be at the bottom. At
the bottom they advertise the company that made paramount pictures possible so
that it gives the company some viewership of all the people watching the movie.
The font of
the ‘Paramount’ is all joined together and old fashioned, this represents that
the company has class and that they have been running for a long time so they are
very experienced with producing class movies.
BREIF 1
For brief
one part 1 I have picked broadcasting which asks me to make a 3 minute scene.
From the different topics that were listed I decided to choose ‘urban life’.
The reason why I chose this topic was because I want to do a gang/hood related
movie as in the generation we live in it is extremely common to see gang
related activities on television or also in real-life. Furthermore I decided to
pick this topic as I already have a vast knowledge of the slang and activities
which are related to gangs but also I want to show my interpretation of what it
is like from my personal view and that it is not as negative as some people
think as with society some youths are discriminated as to look like they are in
gangs just because of clothing, the terminology used and the fact that they are
seen in big groups but with this short film I want to represent the positive
side of urban life.
I will be
watching various English-Urban films multiple times to better my understanding
of the urban life style and I will also be doing this to better my knowledge of
film angles used for this type of film, editing style and sounds.
Movie examples
Anuvahood
As I look to be making an urban life short film I have
researched a couple movies which have this same theme such as Anuvahood, Attack
the block, Adulthood and Kidulthood.
Kenneth (who likes to call himself Kay) begins to realise
he's just another wannabe bad boy... even less than a loser in fact. After
quitting his job at Laimsbury's, Kay vows to become a respected gangster... or
cry trying. A pulls-no-punches, coming-of-age story, centering on one
directionless hopeless "shotter", who finds his true worth in the
face of urban adversity.

In this scene we see the character of ‘Tyrone’ who as we can
see is dressed in a typical roadman style as he is wearing jogging bottoms that
are lowered, a tank top, and a gold chain. And the way the camera angle is used
in this scene is to the levels of authority because we can clearly see that the
character of ‘Tyrone’ has far more authority than the character of ‘kay’ and
his friends. This makes this scene more intimidating. The side camera allows
the audience to see more of what’s going on rather than focusing on only one of
the characters perspectives.
Adulthood

Six years
after kidulthood, Sam Peel is released from jail for killing Trife, he realizes
that life is no easier on the outside than it was on the inside and he's forced
to confront the people he hurt the most. Some have moved on, others are stuck
with the repercussions of his actions that night, but one thing's for certain
everyone has been forced to grow up. Through his journey Sam struggles to deal
with his sorrow and guilt and something else he didn't expect, those seeking
revenge. As he's pursued by a new generation of bad boys, Sam sets about trying
to get the message across to his pursuers that they should stop the violence,
much like Trife tried to tell him all those years ago.

Set in 2002, the film follows two days in the lives of a
group of 15-year-olds from a mixed-income area of West London. The story
focuses mainly upon the antihero Trevor, known as "Trife", and Alisa,
his sometime partner. One of the themes of the movie is Alisa's pregnancy. She
states that Trife is the father. Trife is most displeased with these
developments and he makes it known through absconding from typical fatherly
duties to his young flame.
Attack the block

Attack the
Block follows an unlucky young woman and a gang of tough inner-city kids who
make an unlikely alliance to try to defend their turf against an invasion of savage
alien creatures, turning a South London apartment complex into a war-zone.

For my main logo I have decided to go with the name ‘Mantic
Studios’. The meaning of Mantic is having the power of divination (divination
means practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by
supernatural means).
The logo has no main colour scheme except for black but with
this version I have chosen to use the colour purple for this specific topic.
Various other colours can be used for different genres but also with slight
twists to the logos for example if it was to be a horror movie the logo would
have a dark theme and the logo would be changed to look more spooky.
The logo has a very simplistic design as it shows the initial
‘M’ which is surrounded by 4 pillars with an underlining and below it spells
‘Mantic Studios’. I didn’t want to go into vast detail with my logo as I have
researched other logos and I have seen that they are very simplistic as they
show that simple still says a lot.
The background of the logo can also vary, for this specific
one it carries a lined background.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS
The Universal studios logo is a very simplistic studio logo
